UPS DATA CENTER
Contracting Agent:
UPS
Project Location:
Mahwah, NJ
Project Highlights:
Atlantic Subsurface Imaging performed Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) scanning at the UPS Data Center in Mahwah, NJ. UPS had four 4" plastic conduits that left a manhole together in the same direction; however, only one conduit was in use and was known to go to a nearby pole while the other three were empty. UPS hired Atlantic to trace the other three conduits to find their termination point.
Atlantic first used GPR to determine that the conduits did, in fact, run together from the manhole to the pole. Atlantic suspected that the three unused conduits were capped off and buried about five feet deep just to the right of the pole. UPS excavated and proved this to be true.
Atlantic was then contracted again to trace the unused conduits using Radio Detection (RD) in order to verify the path that the conduits take across the road (GPR was unable to pick this up), and to aid them in pinpointing a blockage or breakage in the pipes. With the aid of two union electricians, Atlantic ran a metal fish into each side of each conduit until the blockage was hit. A radio transmitter was then attached to the fish and the signal was traced using an RD-4000 unit. The route across the street was mapped and the blockage was determined to be at the edge of the road.
This is the origin of all four conduits.
The orange flags are from the GPR scan and mark the outer limits of the four conduits.
